EARLY/MID 19TH CENTURY STAGS, MOTIF & VERSE SAMPLER BY SARAH MASON - c.1845:
$375.00

Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Sarah Mason. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1845 or slightly earliers. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with the following verse with spot motifs to the right of each stanza, two floral borders between them, then underlined with a further floral border
See how the lilies flourish white and fairSee how the ravens fed from Heaven areThen ne'er distrust thy God for cloth and breadWhilst lilies flourish and the ravens fed
The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central strawberry basket with birds, diamonds, a crown and stag to each side, all underlined with a triangulated long stitch border. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit tree with a prancing stag to its left and right, each with a star, crowns, tree and flower basket beside them. There is a floral cornucopia below the stags with a tree, flower, floral motif and crown to each side and Sarah's name plus the date of May 15th below. The top and bottom edges of the linen are then stitched with a deep arcaded floral border whilst the side edges are stitched with a honeysuckle border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with general light puckering, There is an area of damage to both lower corners and one is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on a later backing cloth and may have been conserved at some point in the 20th century. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also a small amount of stitch loss to one of the triangles in the triangulated border below the strawberry basket and minor bleeding to the green stitching of the border pattern running across the bottom edge. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original bird's eye maple frame with gilt slip. Both are in good condition with the slip retaining much of its original gilding and the frame with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age plus a few old losses to the veneer.Measures 11 3/4" x 14"(sight size) and 15 1/4" x 17 3/4" including the frame.
I WOULD ALSO LIKE TO MENTION THAT I HAVE USED A NEW CAMERA TO TAKE THESE PHOTOGRAPHS AND I AM STRUGGLING WITH THE COLOUR BALANCE (something I'm STILL continuing to work on!!) AS SUCH, SOME OF MY PHOTOS HAVE A SLIGHTLY FIERY OR YELLOWISH LOOK TO THEM WHICH IS NOT THE CASE, IT'S JUST MY INCOMPETENCE!PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK. ALSO PLEASE CHECK OUT THE OTHER SAMPLERS I'M SELLING. I AM HAPPY TO COMBINE POSTAGE ON MULTIPLE PURCHASES.PLEASE NOTE - THIS ITEM IS LOCATED IN THE UK BUT CAN BE SHIPPED TO THE LOCATIONS TICKED IN THE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING SECTION.
SHIPPING WILL BE VIA PARCELFORCE OR FEDEX - FULLY TRACKED DELIVERY TO THE USA WITHIN FIVE WORKING DAYS.
