c1900’s Antique Schafer & Vater of Germany Fairy Jasperware Teapot Wedgwood Blue:
$49.00

This is a rare pottery jasperware teapot, embossed with the unusual design of a cream colored fairy, cherub, laurel leaves on a Wedgwood shade of blue. This teapot was made by Schafer and Vater of Germany. The detail of the embossed figures of the reclining fairy with the cherub offering flowers on one side and the fairy helping balance the cherub on her knee on the other side is intricate and extraordinary. The teapot is further decorated with laurel leaves and a butterfly around the top and leaves on the lid, topped off with a white finial. The spout is very fine and delicate and so is its handle.

Schafer & Vater made small ceramics in their factory located in Volkstedt-Rudolstadt Germany. They are best known for their amusing designs and figures. I have seen some of their others, and although the fairy and cherub is rare and unusual design, it is not crazy looking like some of their other designs. Their mark, which is impressed on the back of this teapot, is a crown with an R inside an 8 pointed star. This mark was used starting in the early 1900’s. They were in business from 1890-1962.

This teapot is made of Jasperware which is a fine-grained unglazed stoneware developed by Josiah Wedgwood in 1775 in England. Jasperware is and was very popular and was made by many companies, as did Schafer and Vater.

The teapot is a small teapot, and is 3 & 1/2 inches tall to the top of the final on the lid, 6 & 5/8 inches long from tip of spout to outer handle, with an opening that is 2 & 5/8 inchs in diameter. It is 4 inches wide at its widest point and holds 1 & 2/3 cups (which I was surprised it was that much, actually, when I measured it). It is quite light and weighs only 13.5 ounces. When I poured the water out, it did come out quite slowly because the spout is so slender and there are only THREE holes inside the pot for liquid to get into the spout.

It is in excellent antique condition, with no chips, cracks or even crazing. It looks like it was only displayed, not used. The outside of the pot is the unglazed earthenware, but the inside is a glazed blue, and I saw no crazing on that glaze at all.

Please zoom in on the pictures and see the 360 degree video for a closer look.

I pack with lots of bubble wrap for safe shipping and ship out quickly, sometimes same day, always by next business day, and sometimes on Saturdays if I can get to the post office by noon.

Any questions, please ask, and thanks for looking!
