Here's a historically significant Mahzor, ie Jewish prayer book, for the High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah printed during the reign of Czar Nikolai and Empress Alexandra Fodorovna, the last King and Queen of Russia before they were executed by the Bolsheviks in 1917 just 8 years later.As is well known and recorded throughout the ages, Jews always blessed the Monarch's in which country they lived, regardless if they were anti-semitic or nor (in Russia the former was usually the case).In these prayers, not only the Russian King and Queen are blessed with a long life for themselves and their children including the next heir to the throne Michael, but also the Czar's mother Maria is also blessed! HER husband was a notorious anti-semite who caused a lot of problems to the Jewish people which eventually caused the Russian revolution which his son became the victim.This rare prayer book was printed in 1909 in Vilna (then a Russian vassal), and has the Hebrew prayers on the right and the Russian translation on the left. Something you didn't see so much in most Jewish prayer books printed in the Russian Empire.Contains 380 pages, internally very good condition.Measures 5 x 7 inches.Externally much wear to the covers. There's also on the cover the priestly symbol of the 2 hands used when the Kohanim bless the Jewish people. Presumably, this Mahzor's original owner was a Cohen, descendant of the High Priest Aaron. UNIQUE AND HISTORIC!
