POET EDWIN MARKHAM POEM "THE GRAY MORNS" - SIGNED "EDWIN MARKHAM" - RARE:
$75.00

We are offering a typewritten poem "The Gray Morns", by renowned poet Edwin Markham signed "Edwin Markham". In our research, we couldn't find any mention of this poem, and believe it is one of a kind. It is typed on a small piece of fine paper. We wonder if the poem was written especially for a certain person in Markham's life and given as a gift.
Edwin Markham (1852-1940) - was an American poet and Poet Laureate of Oregon. His birth name was Charles Edward Anson Markham, the name he went by until 1895 when he started using "Edwin". His first and most famous poem, a poem of social protest written at the age of 20, was "The Man with the Hoe" about the hardships of laborers. Much of what Markham wrote and lectured about was concerning social and industrial problems. The house where he wrote "The Man and the Hoe"in San Jose, California was preserved and moved to the city's History Park, which now serves as a poetry center. Edwin Markham wrote essays and articles and lectured on his own approaches to composing poetry. He established the Poetry Society of America in 1910, and in 1922 he wrote "Lincoln, the Man of the People", which was selected from 250 entries to be presented at the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial.
Here is this poem (after which we have written about Edwin Markham's legacy):
What do you bring in your sacks, Gray Girls?"Sea-sand and sorrow."What is that mist that behind you that whirls?"The souls of tomorrow."
What are those shapes on the windy coasts?"The dead souls going."And what are those loads on the backs of the ghosts?"The seed of their sowing."
Edwin Markham was a man who has been honored in many different ways. California and the states of Washington, Pennsylvania and Oregon have schools that bear his name, and there is also a school named in honor of him in Staten Island, NY. The Liberty Ship "Edwin Markham" was launched on May 5, 1942, during WWII.
Edwinn Markham died in his home in Staten Island, NY in 1940. He bequeathed his private library collectionof 1,500 books to Wagner College's Horrmann Library on Staten Island as well as his personal papers including correspondence with Franklin D. Roosevelt, Carl Sandberg and other prominent people. **CONDITION* - Very Good. The typewriting is faded but the words can be made out.
