Bird nests are said to bring good luck--and I cannot argue!
Several years ago a robin built a nest in the rose arbor of our rural Vermont farmhouse. Once the babies had hatched and were gone, the nest fell out of the arbor. I brought it inside and displayed it on our sunporch. I decided that it needed some \'eggs\' to complete the tableaux, so I began searching online. I was disappointed to discover that there were NO eggs available that resembled the vibrant and distinctive robin\'s egg blue that I had seen hatch in our arbor that Vermont spring.
Finally, I resolved to make my own.
It took me several tries with different techniques and paint blends, but in the end, the effect was stunning! The eggs looked SO REAL a neighbor scolded me for \"stealing\" some poor mother robin\'s eggs! Once she understood, she apologized and asked that I make her some.
Since then I have created dozens more for friends, family and neighbors. It seems everyone enjoys them for crafting, wreaths, baby showers, specialty cakes (although the eggs are non-edible) and display purposes. Last year I made 64 for faux nests placed upon each table at a country spring wedding.
Now I am offering them for sale! Each \"egg\" is hand-crafted, using egg forms that are first sanded and then coated several times with acrylic paint. The egg \'shell\' is plastic, so they can be glued or anchored with floral sticks as necessary. They can be used either indoors or outdoors in a covered location--although one of my neighbors declared that a raccoon tried to steal them off her front door wreath. I took it as a compliment--they even fool a raccoon!
The size is approximately 1\" just like the real thing!
I\'ve learned that real bird egg color is determined by their weather zone--the further north, the darker the egg. I feel confident that this is the MOST realistic decorative robin\'s egg available. They seem to sing SPRING!
