Mount St. Helens 1980 Volcanic Ash Glass Dish/Ashtray On May 18th, 1980, Mt. St. Helens in Washington erupted violently. It wasthe deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in the history of the United States. The volcano's eruption blew a huge portion of the mountainside apart,reducing the elevation of the mountain's summit from 9,677ft to 8,363ft and leaving a nearly 1 mile wide horseshoe-shaped crater.For more than nine hours after the eruption, volcanic ash plumed 80,000 feet into the atmosphere and was carried by prevailing winds across the entire country. Bullseye Glass Company of Portland, Oregon collected and ultimately used some of the volcanic ash that fell all over the area to sculpt these commemorative ashtray renderings of Mount St. Helens. - made of volcanic ash from Mount St. Helens 1980 eruption, fused to form volcanic glass, and handcast by artisans at Bullseye Glass Co.
