Adrift meter, alsodrift indicatoranddrift sight, is an optical device used to improvedead reckoningfor aircraftnavigation. It consists of a small telescope extended vertically through the bottom of the aircraft with the eyepiece inside the fuselage at the navigator\'s station. Areticle, normally consisting of spaced parallel lines, is rotated until objects on the ground are seen to be moving parallel to the lines. The angle of the reticle then indicates the aircraft\'s drift angle due to winds aloft, and can be used to calculate the ground speed.

The drift meter has a cross-hair reticle that is stabilized by a gyro and presents a focusable ground image much like a bomb site, that can be slewed to view forward, aft, and side-to-side, with the cross-hairs alignable in azimuth relative to the aircraft heading so that one axis would be exactly parallel to the line of flight over the ground, to compensate for drift. It was used by the navigator for verifying an update set point for the Doppler navigation system as we flew directly over a prominent map point (railroad intersection, river intersection, etc.).
