Union General Benjamin Butler attempted to stifle dissent in New Orleans, Louisiana by monitoring church services, forofferding pastors to give sermons supporting the Confederacy: when the Pastor of St Paul\'s Episcopal Church refused to lead prayers for the President it was closed along with all churches that refused such prayers. An original Union Army General Order, issued by General NB Banks, HQ Dept of the Gulf, New Orleans, Dec 24, 1862. orders the churches reopened in time for for Christmas services, while maintaining a ban on anti-government sermons. 1p 8 x 5\" ptd.
